Dr. Kirk Henwood
Chair - Superintendent South Routt School District
Dr. Kirk Henwood is passionate about public school education and the opportunity it provides to all children. His experiences in working in small school districts have given him a broad skill set including high quality instructional practices, first-hand knowledge implementing instructional technology, human resources, and educational law, all of which he leverages in order to better meet the needs of students and their learning. After graduating from the University of Colorado –Boulder (91), Kirk lived and worked in Poland as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching English to Polish high school students. Kirk returned from Poland as a Peace Corps Scholar and earned his M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction and Multicultural Teacher Education from the University of New Mexico. While earning his degree in New Mexico, Kirk worked on the Navajo Indian Reservation as a high school English teacher and football coach. Dr. Henwood and his family moved to Olathe, Colorado in 2004 when he was hired as an assistant principal in Montrose and Olathe Schools. Kirk worked up through the district eventually becoming the Deputy Superintendent. This is Kirk’s second year as superintendent of South Routt School District. Dr. Henwood successfully defended his dissertation in May 2016 publishing his research and dissertation entitled, Critical Roles Needed by Superintendents of Rural Colorado School Districts for Effective Leadership. Kirk is passionate about student learning, leadership and leadership development. When Kirk is not working, he can be found spending time with his wife and three children. His family enjoys the outdoors, camping and bicycling.
